Yeah, I'd actually finished most of my review before I saw yours. I purposely didn't read yours until after I'd scheduled this one to publish because I didn't want it to influence me too much.

When I did go back to read yours, I was surprised how similar my thoughts matched up with some of what you said. You were right on about the quoting and references. Michael obviously put in a lot of effort on the research side, but I agree with you - I would have liked to hear more in his own words. When he did do that with some of the stories toward the beginning, I really enjoyed it.

Great honest review here Marshall, I found many of those points as well from reading his book and it's always interesting to learn what areas affect the reader. The point about headlines was great, I never put my finger on it when reading the book, but I can see now, those were a point that I didn't care for either, they didn't send a message at all, they were just a word. If they had been written as a message or the point of that chapter, they would outline the content better. Perhaps, that is a result of such scattered thoughts in each chapter and that there was no single message through each of them, but many many different perspectives.

Anyway, nice reminders about some of the lessons in this book.

Wow, thank you, Richard. I'm glad you dropped into the comments here. I've grown to really enjoy Michael just through the brief interaction we've had through twitter, email, and blog comments. I'm looking forward to what else he has on the way - I hear a new book on marketing is in the works for him.

Oh, absolutely. That's what learning from others it all about. My grandfather, who was a school teacher for years, says, "Everyone's a teacher. Sometimes they just teach what not to do."

Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. It's our job - and opportunity - to learn from both.

Definitely do and let me know what you think. It's definitely not for everyone, but I enjoy the business emphasis.

"Do you just copy success? Why not also look at how you could improve on what others do?"

I think I start off coppying, or at least I did. Then I move onto improvement, or rather I at least start from there now. I just thought of a quote I often used in high school, "Learn from the mistakes of others, you don't have time to make them all yourself." You shouldn't always copy success but you should at least look at what came before.

That was one of the best critiques of a book. I like the way you outline the pro's and con's and opinion. I know Michael and enjoy his blog immensely, it is a great read.
