Showing off: What it means to glorify God

Glorify God, glorify God! Sounds like an answer an enthusiastic, Bible study goer would rattle off. But what does it mean? Seriously.

We don’t say “glorify” now – it’s not part of modern vocabulary (unless you’re that Bible study goer). So let me put it slightly differently.

“Glorify,” put bluntly, means show off.

Like if I’m going to glorify a vacuum cleaner, that means I’m going to show off the vacuum cleaner.

In life, especially now that we have all this sweet technology that allows access to just about any info imaginable, showing off matters.

It doesn’t matter how amazing, astounding, and/or awesome something is if no one knows about it. That’s where glorifying – showing off – comes in. We talk about stuff that’s amazing. We show it to our friends. We demostrate how tasty that new restaurant is. And those who see it understand. That’s why showing off matters.

God wants to use us the same way. He doesn’t have to. He could come down onto a mountain with thunder and lightening, but He wants to use us (instead of lightening – think about that).

That’s what our purpose is.

Hint for the upcoming posts (and for everything this site is about): glorifying God – showing Him off – is best accomplished by serving others. That’s why I, Marshal Jones Jr., am so hyped about serving others. And why I want to encourage you in serving others also.

Serving Suggestions:

(1) Believe in God. I don’t mean believe that He exists, though that’s a requirement too. I mean believe in Him like you would something you’re insanely passionate about. People will see through you. If you don’t believe in what you’re showing off, no one will believe you.

(2) Work every day of your life for God. Every. Single. Day. That’s what people do when they’re showing off.

Thanks for explaining the definition of glorify. It is such a churchy word that has lost meaning. I like the idea of showing off God. Now time for follow through.

  2. David,

Yes, I’m thankful you enjoyed it. I’ll hopefully be able to add more definitions in the future. There are way too many churchy words that no one (at least not me) really knows what they mean when they use them. I don’t want to get all “definitiony” either though. Like you said, “Now time for follow through.”

Thank you for the reading. I’ve enjoyed your posts as well. Keep in touch, and let me know if there’s anything I can help you with at your blog.

    Blessings,
